A living thought that made a recent comeback is the breakdown of editorial, pedagogical and transformational forms of communication.
To recap, editorial communication is a set of answers to a group of questions. The most obvious example of editorial communication is a story or media.
Pedagogical communication focuses on the questions and allows for the discovery (/sharing) of answers. It is when we talk about skills (how to do something) or meta-skills (what to do with the things we do).
Transformational communication is much more slippery, as it is, by definition, meta-communication. It is communication about individual questions and answers. It is anchored in philosophizing, and while it holds the most value, it alienates those interested in immediate ROI.
On a personal level, I learned this week that I sometimes move too quickly from thoughts. Finding this thought made me consider its potential value in the year since I wrote it.
This week, I invite you to list (3-5) channels of editorial, pedagogical and transformational communication. Feel free to share with a colleague or friend or reply to this email.
Communication
I will do my best to cover questions: but async text does have its limits : )
+ I deposit that most transformational can't be known ahead of time, and needs "live" sense-making
+ there is a difference between transferring meta-skills (pedagogically) and enabling their authorship
+ I use vertical scale to communicate an offering that increases in value as opposed to numbers
This model is, of course, not accurate. It was more of a way to capture some axioms.
I'm coming up with a lot of questions on the chart as I try to fully grasp it.
1) why does editorial have to be Asynch and why does Transformational need to be Synch? Can't a book be transformational?
2) Aren't Meda Skills very related to Framing and reframing, and can't they even be thought of as overlapping to a large extent?
3) Why the title "Growth and marketing"? That seems to be to tie this model too closely to business, but it seems to me it can be applied to whole raft of disciplines.
4) What does vertical scale mean? In business, I always thought of vertical scale as just expanding in the same market, but transformational would be more like Amazon moving from retail to cloud storage (AWS).
